“The Recess” by Director Navid Nikkhah Azad competes in the 15th Vox Feminae Festival in Croatia, which runs from May 7 – June 17, 2021.
“The Recess” marks its 23rd international appearance at Vox Feminae Festival in Croatia.
Vox Feminae Festival is an international festival held annually, since 2007, in Zagreb, Croatia.
It is organized by non-profit organization Expanse of Gender and Media Culture ‘Common Zone’ that provides innovative cultural and gender patchwork.
It was founded with the aim to promote and increase the visibility of women’s artistic achievements through the international competition film program, exhibitions and performances as well as workshops and educational content.
Vox Feminae Festival presents awards on the following themes:
- Gender equality
- Women’s creativity and achievements
- Non-stereotypical gender roles and relationships
- Feminism
- LGBTIQ
“The Recess” competes in the Narrative Short Films competition section of the festival.
“The Recess”, tells the story of Seventeen-year-old Sahar, who is determined to watch her favorite soccer team play for the league championship. Barred from attending sports events as a woman, Sahar disguises herself as a boy with the help of her friends. Things take a tragic turn when Sahar’s disguise is uncovered.
Inspired by true events, The Recess explores gender oppression in Iranian society.
