“The Recess”, top-rated short film by Iranian director Navid Nikkhah Azad, competes in the official short film competition section of the 45th Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Elche (FICIE), which is recognized as a Goya Awards qualifying festival by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain.
“The Recess” (Spanish: “El Recreo”) directed by Navid Nikkhah Azad has been selected to compete in the official short films competition section of the 45th Elche International Independent Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Elche, abbreviated as FICIE), which takes place in the city of Elche (Alicante province, Spain) from July 8-22.
Recognized as a Goya Awards qualifying festival by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain, the Elche International Independent Film Festival (FICIE) is one of the most prestigious and long-standing film festivals in Spain.
The Spanish-Iranian short drama “The Recess” has competed in 120 international film festivals including FIAPF-accredited, Goya Awards qualifying festivals and Academy Award® qualifying festival around the world and has won 21 awards.

Directed by Navid Nikkhah Azad and produced by Navid Nikkhah Azad and the Spanish producer Delia Guerra Parra, “The Recess” brings the story of the self-immolated Sahar Khodayari (Iranian Blue Girl) to life.
Inspired by true events, the movie follows Sahar, a 17-year-old student who is determined to skip high school during recess to go to the football stadium to watch a football match between Esteghlal F.C. vs. Al-Ain as part of the AFC Champions League in violation of the national ban on women entering football stadiums in Iran.
