“The Recess” directed by Navid Nikkhah Azad has been selected to go on screen in the competition section of the 11th Corto di Sera – Independent Short Film Festival, which takes place in Messina, Italy from August 10-13, 2022.
Corto di Sera – Independent Short Film Festival aims to promote the independent short film production in all its forms as an artistic and expressive language. The main goal of the festival is to create an annual event in Italy where filmmakers, video makers, professionals or enthusiasts cinema can meet and connect different experiences.
The Spanish-Iranian short drama “The Recess” has competed in 112 international film festivals including FIAPF-accredited, Goya Awards qualifying festivals and Academy Award® qualifying festival around the world and has won 21 awards.

Directed by Navid Nikkhah Azad and produced by Navid Nikkhah Azad and the Spanish producer Delia Guerra Parra, “The Recess” brings the story of the self-immolated Sahar Khodayari (Iranian Blue Girl) to life.
Inspired by true events, the movie follows Sahar, a 17-year-old student who is determined to skip high school during recess to go to the football stadium to watch a football match between Esteghlal F.C. vs. Al-Ain as part of the AFC Champions League in violation of the national ban on women entering football stadiums in Iran.
