“The Recess” (Spanish: El Recreo), directed by Navid Nikkhah Azad, was showcased in the main competition of the 2023 Ponme Un Corto in Spain from August 31 to September 30, 2023.
This Spanish-Iranian short drama has gained widespread recognition, having been selected in 166 international film festivals, including prestigious ones like FIAPF-accredited and Goya Awards qualifying events, as well as festivals that qualify for the Academy Awards®. The film has received 166 official selections and 32 awards.
Directed and produced by Navid Nikkhah Azad, with co-producers Delia Guerra Parra and Mohammad Shahverdy, “The Recess” brings to life the story of Sahar Khodayari, also known as the Iranian Blue Girl.
Inspired by true events, “The Recess” follows Sahar, a 17-year-old student who is determined to skip high school during recess to go to the football stadium to watch a football match between Esteghlal F.C. vs. Al-Ain as part of the AFC Champions League in violation of the national ban on women entering football stadiums in Iran.
