“The Recess” by Navid Nikkhah Azad has been selected as a finalist to compete for the Best Film award in the “Sport & Society” competition section of the 2024 International Sport Film Festival Slovenia (June 19-22). This marks the 168th official selection for Navid Nikkhah Azad’s acclaimed political short drama.
The International Sport Film Festival Slovenia is accredited by the FICTS (Federation of Sport Televisions and of the Images on Screen). Winners in each category will advance to the Sport Movies & TV – Milano International FICTS Fest, which is the world finals of the World FICTS Challenge, the worldwide championship of cinema, television, and sport culture, organized in sixteen festivals.

Based on the tragic story of Sahar Khodayari, known as Blue Girl in Iran, “The Recess” follows Sahar, a 17-year-old student who is determined to skip high school during recess to go to the football stadium to watch a football match between Esteghlal F.C. and Al-Ain as part of the AFC Champions League, in violation of the national ban on women entering football stadiums in Iran.
In 2022, “The Recess,” after winning Best Film in the “Sport and Society” section of the Beausoleil Côte d’Azur International FICTS Festival du Cinéma Sportif, made it to the final of the World FICTS Challenge of SPORT MOVIES & TV 2022 – 40 MILANO INTERNATIONAL FICTS FEST, which took place in Italy from November 9-13.
The Spanish-Iranian short drama “The Recess” has been officially selected in 168 international film festivals, including FIAPF-accredited, Goya Awards qualifying festivals and Academy Award® qualifying festivals around the world and has won 34 awards.
“The Recess” is written and directed by Navid Nikkhah Azad and produced by director Navid Nikkhah Azad, Spanish producer Delia Guerra Parra, and Iranian producer Mohammad Shahverdi from Iran.
