Tehran (NAVID AZAD) – “The Recess” by Navid Nikkhah Azad won the Best Short Film award at Oxford Film Festival (2021) in the U.S.
“The Recess” by Director Navid Nikkhah Azad won Best Short Film award at the 18th Oxford Film Festival in the US, which took place from March 24-28, 2021.
“The Recess” marked its 21st international appearance at Oxford Film Festival in the US.
Oxford Film Festival was founded in 2003 by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council.
In 2008, the Oxford Film Festival became an independent non-profit organization with 501c3 status committed to celebrating the art of independent cinema.
In the shorts program, “The Recess” by Director Navid Nikkhah Azad, a story of a young girl in a conservative Muslim society who dresses as a boy to attend a soccer game, won Best Narrative.
“The Recess” competed in the Narrative Short Films competition section of the festival.
“The Recess”, tells the story of Seventeen-year-old Sahar, who is determined to watch her favorite soccer team play for the league championship. Barred from attending sports events as a woman, Sahar disguises herself as a boy with the help of her friends. Things take a tragic turn when Sahar’s disguise is uncovered.
Inspired by true events, The Recess explores gender oppression in Iranian society.
